Construction vs. Cancer took place at Angel Stadium on Sunday April 28th and was a great success! This year’s event had over 600 attendees and 70 volunteers, and was organized to bring awareness of the support and services available to families with children with cancer, and to also raise money in order to provide these important resources. WiOPS member Lauren Willingham was one of the volunteers at this fun-filled day, and filled us in on her time at the event.
To keep in theme with the construction industry, there were backhoes and scissor lifts that the kids and their families were not only able to learn about, but to operate as well! They also got to see cement trucks in action, learn about different types of tools, and see many different aspects of construction. Many of the children put on performances and there was a massive sand box for kids to play in. Local fire and police departments were there, and showed off their firetrucks, ambulances, and working horses. Home Depot had a kids’ craft station that was a huge hit, and there were also games, coloring stations, and even a reading area with the author from “Good Night Good Night Construction Site! The children and their families also enjoyed some carnival favorites such as face painting, balloonists, magicians, photo booths, and food trucks! Even Iron Man and Star Wars characters were in attendance!
Lauren had some of her family come by with their kids and they had a blast. This was the first year they put on this event, and are planning on doing it again next year due to the overwhelming support and turnout. Below are some pictures from 2019’s Construction vs. Cancer event!
