Inclusion Spotlight: Howard Building Corporation

Here at WiOPS we like to highlight the individuals, companies, and organizations that support the women in our industry! Howard Building Corporation (HBC) has been a catalyst for change in regards to diversity and inclusion, and we’re proud to recognize them for their efforts.

HBC is a Southern California-based general contractor with both Los Angeles and Orange County offices. They are 100% employee owned and were voted as one of the “Best Places to Work” by both Los Angeles Business Journal and Orange County Business Journal in 2021. HBC is actively involved in WiOPS and consistently have employees attending our monthly events.

With a strong emphasis on their DEI efforts, HBC has both set measurable targets and made company-wide changes to better secure a workplace reflective of the community’s demographics while enhancing the opportunities of historically underrepresented groups. They have a target inclusion rate of 50% Minority/Disadvantaged Status certified vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors. They have equitable training opportunities including leadership development, on-the-job mentorships, an online learning platform (HBCUniversity), and tuition reimbursement for their employees. HBC set up an employee-led DEI Resource Group with a mission to continue to build a culture that promotes equity, celebrates difference, and encourages all employee-owners to succeed. In 2021, they met their annual DEI hiring, training, and promotional goals and actually exceed the total demographic diversity goals by 300%(!) for women and by 15% across all minority groups.

Women at HBC:

  • HBC named their first female Vice President, Genevieve West, in 2020 and recently added the first female to the Board of Directors.
  • Throughout 2021, they recognized the contributions of eight women at HBC by nominating them for industry awards and recognitions.
  • The representation of women at HBC is double the industry’s national average.
  • HBC partners with women-focused industry organizations (including WiOPS) and supports their employees in attending events to promote their personal and professional development.
