Karen works for Herrero Builders as a Knowledge Area Leader and Business Operations.  Her current assignment is Project Executive on the UCSF NHPH Project for the Herrero Boldt Webcor JV. She has been in the construction industry for 20 years.

When asked how she got into the construction industry she replied “When I was just out of school, I was fortunate enough to get a job in the College system where my father worked.  I moved into facilities and then project management and that peaked my interest.  When I relocated to Wisconsin, I was looking for an organization that fit with me culturally and was recognized for the great things they did in their communities and The Boldt Company was that organization.  My interest and desire to remain in the construction industry just kept growing as I saw the impacts we could have on the city and communities in which we live and work.”

Her favorite thing about construction is the teamwork and collaboration of so many talented people as well as the pride in completing a project like a school or hospital and knowing she had some part in making her community better.

Karen is currently the Vice President of the Sacramento Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction NAWIC and is the Vice Chair of the California Industry Education Foundation.  In her spare time, she likes being on the water with the Northern California Searay Boat Club NCSBC or the Sacramento Yacht Club SYC.

Karen has been fortunate to have many mentors and individuals who have inspired her in her career.  “Honestly I am most inspired and in awe of the amazing men and women who work in the field day in and day out building the amazing structures and facilities across this country.  They work through all kinds of varying conditions and are just amazing individuals and I am so proud that both my Sons are in the trades.”

Karen is also inspired by this saying “If there isn’t a seat for you at the table, bring your own chair.”
